the CoaST project

Wherever we go and whatever we do, we all have an impact on the
environment and community and we often leave more behind than just footprints. By making positive choices during your visit to either of our apartments, you can help to look after Mevagissey, Falmouth and the whole of Cornwall ensuring that it retains everything that is special about it for your next visit. Although we are only two self-catering apartments in a very large tourism industry, we can all make a small-but positive difference, hence the reason why we have become a member of CoaST.
This is a non profit organisation which has been set up to promote sustainable tourism within Cornwall.

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
At ocean's edge we take our recycling seriously, as we know you do at home! Say no to excess packaging where possible, especially plastic bags- instead, you will find that are a number of "proper" jute shopping bags located in the kitchen . Please make full use of these. You will also find recycling bags for paper, glass and cans in the apartment in Mevagissey and they can be put directly into the correct bins in the bin store. At water's edge in Falmouth, you can recycle plastic bottles, newspapers and glass bottles and jars directly within the bin store in the apartments' car park. You will find that we use low impact cleaning materials from Ecover, biodegradable refuse sacks and low energy light bulbs.

2. Reduce traffic: walk, cycle or use public transport
Walking and cycling are great ways to see the area without adding to the traffic problem [and when you've driven once around the cornish lanes, you'll know exactly what we mean]. Look at our "out & about" section for details of cycle hire , walking the coastal path and car-free days out using public transport. You'll see Cornwall from an entirely new perspective and many of the places you'll discover are well off the "normal" tourist beaten track.

3. Stay Local, Eat Local, Buy Local, See Local
Support our local producers and services around the apartments - this way your visit has a real benefit to the communities of Mevagissey,Falmouth and Cornwall. And you get to see and taste the real quality and diversity that Cornwall offers. Visit Farmers Markets, farm shops, the village shops, local art galleries, pubs, cafes and the fish hut in the harbour. Again, have a look in our "out & about" section for lots of details . Our "gallery" section also offers a small selection of the local art and crafts that you can see decorating the walls, shelves and sideboards in the apartments and the majority of this originates from Cornwall.

4. Chill out – switch off….
You can see the stars at night in Cornwall…..so help us to reduce light pollution, energy use and CO2 emissions. Switch off lights [ we aim to have replaced all of the lightbulbs with low energy ones by the year end], make sure that nothing is left on standby and please let us know if we have any dripping taps. Please make full use of our towels but remember that the more you use the more that needs to be washed. We dont want you to feel restricted - because after all, you are on holiday - but, every single effort helps protect and enhance our unique environment. It only takes a moment of thought.

5. Follow the Countryside Code: respect – protect – enjoy.
The Countryside Code reminds visitors to look after and protect plants and animals; take your litter away with you; leave gates and property as you find them and consider other people and users when visiting the countryside. This way, we can all enjoy the delights that Cornwall has to offer - and so can our grandchildren.
